By Jennifer L. Lutz-Ricciardone, MNS Staff WriterThe American Dream Mall, a multi-billion dollar multi-million dollar shopping center, is opening in downtown Auburn.
The mall has been around for nearly 70 years and is owned and operated by the same company that owns the American Dream Casino in the Bay Area.
The American Dreams, which is owned by the state of California, has been operating at Auburn since 1976.
Its opening is a huge deal for Auburn and the city of Auburn, which will be the third-largest city in the state, with about 11,000 residents.
The first American Dream opened in Auburn in 1983, with a $1.5 billion renovation and expansion that added a food court, restaurant, shopping center and entertainment district.
The shopping center also includes the first indoor pool, a skate park and a basketball court.
Auburn was the first city in Alabama to have a state-of-the-art sports complex when the Alabama House of Representatives approved $2.5 million to renovate the Tiger Stadium.
In December, the Auburn city council approved the $3.6 million renovation of the Auburn-Auburntons sports arena and will soon open its doors to the public.
