The Oakwood Mall in Georgia is the first mall to open in Georgia in more than 20 years, according to the Georgia Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
“We’re really excited to see the progress of the development of the mall and we look forward to the first day of mall open,” said Adam Jaffe, director of the Georgia Dept. of Commerce, which manages the mall.
The mall opened May 10, 2017.
It’s not clear how many people will use it, or what they’ll do once inside, but the mall offers an escape for anyone looking for a place to live and shop.
Mall of Georgia is just one of more than 60 malls in Georgia and the rest are still under construction.
Most of the new malls opened in the last five years, with a few remaining in construction.
Some malls are in urban centers or suburbs, such as the Greenfield Mall in Greenfield, Georgia.
“We were able to open the Greenfields mall in 2016, and it’s the second mall in the United States to open after the Greenlands mall in Greenville, Georgia, which opened in 2013,” said Jaffe.
About 50% of the existing malls are privately operated.
Georgia has about 8 million people living in metro Atlanta.
Atlanta’s mall boom, as measured by economic output and job creation, was boosted by the housing market and a boom in tourism, including Atlanta International Airport.
