MARIA MILLAD NUDES MARIA, NEPAL—Naked buses, full-frontal nudity, and a woman who was barely dressed in a bus driver’s uniform made it easy to understand why the Nepalese government’s new female bus driver is attracting attention.
The bus driver, Mariah Mallad, 29, is one of a few female drivers who are allowed to work in Nepal.
The Nepalesian government, however, does not allow women to work for its national railways.
Mallad started her career as a bus dispatcher, working in Kathmandu, where she has since then earned a reputation as a fearless and fun-loving operator.
She’s also a popular blogger on the social media platform Twitter.
The Nepaleses government says Mallad is a woman of high caliber and the country needs more female bus drivers, but she says she is not interested in working for the government.
She told The Associated Press in an interview that she has no intention of getting married and doesn’t care what the Nepali government thinks about her sexuality.
Mallady is the first woman to be hired as a driver in Nepal’s new National Transport Bureau (NTB), which was launched on Wednesday.NTB head Sharmila Bhushan says Mallady will be the first female driver in the country to drive a passenger bus, adding that Mallad will take on a new role, driving in the capital Kathmandukh.NTBs is a government-run company, and the government is hoping that female drivers will improve safety on buses.
The NTBs board was not made public.
The country’s transport ministry said in a statement that Mallady’s appointment was a “great decision” for the country and would benefit the country’s national transport network.NTBS board members were not immediately available for comment.
The company’s website says it has drivers in Kathmai, Phnom Penh, Phuoc Tun, Kachin, and Lhasa, among others.
