Hanes is to lay off about 80 people and close some stores at its mall in Dublin after it received a notice from the Irish government that the mall’s closure was required to comply with an EU directive.
The decision was made by the Irish Department of Finance in a letter on Monday to the company which owns the property in the city centre, which has been a target of a number of raids and security measures by gardaí.
The closure of the mall, which is in the heart of Dublin’s CBD, is part of a plan by the government to reduce the number of garda raids and secure the premises, according to the letter, which was published by the News Letter newspaper.
The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said in the letter that it received “an order from the Minister for Agriculture to impose a closure date of 12 November”.
The department said the decision to close the mall “was taken after consultation with the Irish Government and the management of Hanes, and after the assessment of the situation”.
It said the company “has a duty to maintain the health and safety of the residents of the area”.
The closure would affect the entire area and “will be a major disruption for the local economy”, the department said.
It said: “The department has taken the decision not to take further action at this stage.
We will continue to monitor the situation closely and take any necessary action to ensure that the residents and visitors of the Mall are protected.”
The department, which operates the mall in the CBD, said the mall was closed to allow for “the orderly closure of a portion of the premises” as well as a security operation to secure the property.
“The Department is aware that the situation at the mall has caused significant disruption to the local and international business community in the last week,” it said.
“Hanes Mall will remain closed to the public until further notice.”
Hanes is one of Ireland’s largest retail chains and is one the largest employers in the country.
It has about 5,500 staff and has close to 4,000 stores in the capital.
The mall is owned by the Hanes Group, which owns a number to include the Hennessey’s supermarket chain and the H&M clothing chain.
It is the biggest employer in the City of Dublin and employs more than 2,000 people.
