Westgate mall in Florida is shutting down for about two weeks to allow construction to begin on a $1 billion development that will eventually include a movie theater, an amusement park and an apartment complex.
The mall is the largest in Florida and the second-largest in the nation.
The project is to be known as Westgate Park, and will include a hotel, residential units and an entertainment complex, according to a statement released by the mall’s operator, Mall of America.
It also includes a parking garage, which Mall of Americas says is needed to accommodate the projected additional hotel and condo development.
As part of the project, Mall Of America said it will be constructing a new pedestrian walkway connecting the Westgate shopping center with a new retail mall, which is scheduled to open in 2019.
Mall Of America and Westgate Resorts have not disclosed how much the project will cost or how long it will take.
The project is being developed by The Florida Mall Corp. The developer is located in a small town on the east side of Tallahassee, about 20 miles from Westgate.
Tallahasseans for America has lobbied for a mall in Westgate to be built for years.
Earlier this year, the state of Florida approved a tax credit to help fund a proposed development that would include a restaurant, retail space and a hotel.
A proposed project for a Westgate parking garage has been postponed by the state.
